Starter Motor Identification: What to Check Before Matching a Replacement

Voltage, mounting, pinion details, rotation, terminals and the OEM reference all help separate a true starter match from a lookalike.

A starter has to fit mechanically and work electrically

Starter motors are often identified from an OEM number or the manufacturer label on the removed unit. That number is the best place to begin, but a reliable replacement also needs to agree with the machine’s electrical system and physical mounting.

A starter that looks similar on a bench may still have the wrong voltage, flange, pinion position, solenoid orientation or terminal arrangement.

Record the critical identification points

A clear side photograph and a straight-on photograph of the drive end can be especially useful when labels are incomplete.

  • OEM and manufacturer numbers from the old starter.
  • System voltage.
  • Rated power or kW if marked.
  • Pinion tooth count and pinion details if available.
  • Mounting flange and bolt-hole arrangement.
  • Rotation where the application specifies it.
  • Solenoid position and terminal layout.
  • Machine, engine and serial or chassis information.

Do not use tooth count as the only match

Tooth count is important, but it is only one part of the drive geometry. The pinion, nose housing, mounting depth and ring-gear relationship still need to suit the application. The same applies to electrical ratings: voltage and power are useful checks, not a substitute for confirmed part-number or application evidence.

Send the complete identification set

For a faster Terra enquiry, send the old starter number first, then add the machine or engine details and photographs. If you know the voltage, tooth count, power and mounting information, include those too. The more of these points agree, the stronger the replacement match becomes.

FIND. MATCH. MOVE.
